Liechtenstein Transport by Bus from Sargans, Buchs and Feldkirch
There is no airport and no border post in Liechtenstein. How the bus network connects Sargans, Buchs and Feldkirch to every municipality.
Getting Into and Around Liechtenstein Without an Airport or Border Post
Liechtenstein has no airport and no train station. You enter through one of three rail gateways in Switzerland or Austria, then let the LIEmobil bus network take over. The puzzle: each gateway feels different, and the bus zone structure catches Swiss Travel Pass holders off guard. This guide explains which station to aim for, which bus line to board, and how to pay without a dedicated app.
The Three Rail Gateways: Sargans, Buchs SG and Feldkirch
Sargans, Switzerland
The most direct option from Zurich. Trains from Zurich Hauptbahnhof run every half hour and take 55 minutes. From the station, board LIEmobil line 11 to Vaduz. The bus ride lasts 25 to 30 minutes. Total journey time from Zurich Airport to Vaduz is about 1 hour 45 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs roughly CHF 40 to 50.
Buchs SG, Switzerland
A slightly slower alternative from Zurich, at 1 hour 5 minutes by train. From Buchs SG, LIEmobil line 12 runs to Schaan in 10 to 15 minutes. Buchs is less busy than Sargans and closer to the northern municipalities like Ruggell and Eschen if that is your destination.
Feldkirch, Austria
Best if you are coming from eastern Austria or Friedrichshafen Airport. The train from Zurich takes 1 hour 15 minutes. From the station, LIEmobil line 11 or 14 reaches Schaan in 20 to 25 minutes. Friedrichshafen Airport to this Austrian gateway via Bregenz takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and costs CHF 25 to 35 one way. No border control exists between Austria and Liechtenstein.
How the LIEmobil Bus Network Stitches it Together
The Core Routes
LIEmobil operates all public buses in the principality, running frequent routes that connect all 11 municipalities. Lines 11 and 14 are the workhorses: line 11 runs from Sargans through Vaduz to Schaan and on to Feldkirch, while line 14 links Feldkirch to Schaan directly. Line 12 connects Buchs SG to Schaan and the northern towns. Buses run roughly every half hour on main routes during weekdays, with reduced frequency on Sundays and after 20:00.
Fares and Zones
The system uses four fare zones. A single ticket costs CHF 3.00 to CHF 10.00, depending on how many zones you cross. A day pass ranges from CHF 6.00 to CHF 20.00. If you are staying a full day and plan to make at least two trips, buy the day pass.
Paying for Buses Without a Dedicated App
The absence of a separate Liechtenstein transport app is the most common frustration. Do not search for one. Instead, download the SBB Mobile app before you leave home. It covers all LIEmobil timetables and lets you buy single tickets and day passes for any zone. The app also handles tickets for Swiss trains to Sargans and Buchs SG, making it a single tool for the whole journey.
Cash in Swiss francs works on the bus, but only if you have exact change. Drivers do not give change. Ticket machines are available at the three gateway stations but not at every stop inside the country. Buy your return ticket at the station before you board.
The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid on these buses, so if you already have one, you pay half the listed single fare. The Swiss Travel Pass covers all zones when valid, but check the zone map on the SBB Mobile app before boarding to avoid a fine.
What This System Means for Your Itinerary
One full day is enough to cover Vaduz, the castle viewpoint and a short hike. Stay two days only if you plan to use the country as a base for hiking in the Alps. The bus network makes day trips to Feldkirch (20 minutes), Sargans (25 minutes) and St. Gallen (1 hour) simple. You do not need more than one base in the country itself.
The single thing that most often goes wrong is assuming the Swiss Travel Pass covers all buses automatically without checking the zone. Buy the day pass for CHF 6.00 to CHF 20.00 instead of risking a fine. This system suits hikers, passport-stamp seekers and day-trippers from Zurich. It does not suit nightlife seekers, backpackers wanting a social scene, or anyone planning a multi-day urban itinerary, because you can cover the capital before lunch on day one.
Common Questions
Does my Swiss Travel Pass work on Liechtenstein buses?
Yes, but only if it is valid for the specific zones you are travelling through. The pass covers zones 1 to 4, but you must check that your ticket or pass includes those zones. A visitor from Zurich once bought a Swiss Travel Pass valid only for Zurich and was fined on the bus.
Is there a Liechtenstein bus app?
No. There is no dedicated LIEmobil app. Use the SBB Mobile app instead. It sells bus tickets, shows timetables for all routes, and works for both Swiss and Liechtenstein transport. Download it before you arrive.
Can I pay with a credit card on the bus?
No. Buses only accept cash in Swiss francs. Credit cards and contactless payment are not accepted on board. Buy your ticket at the station ticket machine or through SBB Mobile before boarding.
What happens if I arrive after 23:00?
Buses stop running around 22:30 on most routes. Your only option is a taxi from Sargans, Buchs or Feldkirch into the principality, which costs approximately CHF 40 to 60. Hotels may arrange a transfer if you call ahead.
